Microsoft recently did a study and found that in the year 2000 the average attention span of a human was about 12 seconds. That average has now dropped to 8 seconds, which is less than a goldfish. The digital age has provided lots of platforms and marketing arenas but the fight for attention is tougher than ever. Keep this in mind when creating videos, make your content as engaging as possible in the first 8 seconds.

Creator Tip: When creating your videos, keep any intro and series graphics after the 10 second mark. Use the first 10 seconds of your video to capture and retain your audience’s attention.

During the editing process of your videos, keep in mind where you are drawing the watchers eye when using graphics and titles that may become distracting. Viewers retain 58% of what they see but only 10% of what they read.

You Tube now requires 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours in the previous 12 months to become a monetized channel. The higher you rank, the more impressions you make. Ranking is directly determined by video watch time. So the goal is t get the audience watching, and keep them watching.

Facebook requires 10,000 followers and 30,000 one minute views on videos at least 3 minutes long to install in stream ads. Again, retaining your audience is crucial to growing your brand and maintaining that audience.

Creator Tip: YouTube thumbnails preform better when a person’s face is used, preferably with a positive expression such as a smile. If possible, using the magic number of 3 faces seems to preform the best by comparison.

The front line to making an impression on your audience is the video thumbnail. Search results can be long lists and an image that pops could be the defining factor to getting that click! Implementing the strategies above can increase your influence and that can be expanded upon by researching each platform’s proven tactics and optimizing accordingly.
